What is a Radiant Barrier?

Radiant Barriers are a major part of what makes SuperFOIL products’ thermal value so excellent.

But what exactly is a Radiant Barrier? Well…

“A Radiant Barrier is a surface that is able to reliably reflect the majority of Infrared Radiation (radiant heat) that comes into contact with it.”

Additional Details:

We’re most familiar with reflective surfaces in terms of reflecting visible light; checking your reflection in the mirror, for example. However, that doesn’t mean this is the only way for reflection to take place.

In fact, reflection can and does occur across the entirety of the electromagnetic spectrum, not only with visible light. In the case of radiant barriers, it is Infrared Radiation (sometimes called radiant heat or thermal radiation) being reflected.

It’s important to remember that Radiant Barriers will likely be worse at reflecting visible light, than something designed to reflect light such as a mirror.

For example, SuperFOIL’s Radiant Barriers reflect 95% of radiant heat! But you definitely wouldn’t want to use our products as a mirror.
