4 Ways You Can Improve Energy Savings This Year

Energy bills. You know they’re coming, but somehow they always catch you off-guard. The worst part is looking at the numbers and thinking “That can’t be right”. Even though it feels like you’re not using that much energy, the bills go up, adding up to your monthly expenses. It’s not an uncommon situation.

Fortunately, there are ways you can improve energy savings. Here are 4 of them:

1. Find and seal leaks in your home

This might seem like a no-brainer, but you’ll be surprised by how many people are actually unaware this is a problem that contributes to their energy expenses going up, especially during the cold winter months.

It’s important to mention that air leaks can occur all over your home. Some are pretty obvious, such as under-the-door drafts or air leaks around your windows for instance. To improve energy savings, you also need to find the less obvious gaps. For that, you should inspect:

  • The area where siding and chimneys meet.
  • Plumbing lines.
  • Power outlets.
  • Attic hatches.
  • Exterior corners.

That’s just to name a few, but we’re sure you get the idea. If you want to be completely sure you didn’t miss any leaks and you have some money you want to invest, you can always just hire a qualified technician to conduct a home energy assessment.

2. Adjust your thermostat to improve energy savings

Many people forget to adjust the temperature in their homes according to their day-to-day activities. The best thing you can do is program your thermostat so that it’s synced with the life you and your family lead. Small tweaks such as setting a lower temperature when you are asleep or out of the house can really make a big difference.

Programming your thermostat to energy-saving settings will cost you nothing, but it could end up saving you a lot of money in the long run.

3. Use energy-efficient light bulbs

This is a great tip you can use all year long to help you improve your energy savings. All you have to do is replace old light bulbs with LEDs or CFLs. The best choice would be LEDs even though they are pricier.

Why? Because quality LED light bulbs not only last longer, but also offer comparable or better light quality than other types of lighting. This way, you will be able to improve energy savings without having to make a compromise when it comes to your comfort.

4. Insulate your home

Proper insulation minimizes the exchange of heat through a surface such as a wall, roof or attic. During the winter, insulation prevents the warm air from escaping your home, while keeping the cool air in during the summer months.improve energy savings

This means the heating and cooling systems will have to use less energy to warm or cool the air in your home. The better insulated the walls, floors and roof are, the more money you will be able to save on your monthly energy bills. Makes sense, right?
