Wall Insulation

Wall insulation is another important factor to consider when building or renovating your home. Installing SuperFOIL insulation in your walls is a cost-effective way to keep your home comfortable and reduce your heating and cooling costs. In addition to reducing your energy bills, SuperFOIL’s high thermal performance and water vapour resistance can also help to reduce the risk of condensation in the home.

Timber Frame Internal Insulation

In most cases you can meet or exceed Building Regulations performance with just a single layer of SuperFOIL Insulation. Not only does SuperFOIL keep your home warm in winter, but it’s reflective properties also help keep you cooler in the summer by reducing solar gain.

When installing internally you could choose SF19, SF19+, SF40, or SF60 depending on your required performance.

Installation would simply consist of stapling the SuperFOIL to the studs, overlap and seal all joints with SuperFOIL tape, then complete the install with counter battens and plasterboard.

How to Install

Apply SuperFOIL directly to the studs from the roll either horizontally or vertically.

When installing horizontally start at the bottom of the wall and work up to the top, overlapping at each junction.

When installing vertically start at the high point and roll down to the floor.

Apply tension to the SuperFOIL as you staple in place;  regular intervals of 50mm to 100mm spacing is recommended. Cut to length and fix the next layer.

Overlap all joints by a minimum of 50mm and staple onto the studs where the joint crosses the rafter.

At the floor & ceiling ensure extra length is allowed to ensure a good seal is created. Then fix with a batten.

To fix plasterboard, install counter battens sized according to the product used. Always apply battens around window reveals. Seal all joints, cuts & intrusions (such as pipes, ducting etc) using SuperFOIL tape before fixing plasterboard to the battens.

Note: SuperFOIL acts as a vapour control layer (Excluding our breathable products) when installed correctly as such an additional VCL is typically not required, if you are concerned that there may be a condensation risk in your particular circumstances please contact us and we can run a condensation risk analysis calculation.

Solid Wall Internal Insulation

Installing SuperFOIL on your Solid Walls is a snap. Depending on your required performance, you can use SF19, SF19+, SF40, or SF60 to achieve Building Regulations level of performance.

Simply fit your battens to the wall or you can create a stud wall, then staple the SuperFOIL to the battens/studs overlap and seal all joints with SuperFOIL tape. You would then complete the install with counter battens and plasterboard.

How to Install

First you will need to install vertical battens to your existing wall. Apply SuperFOIL directly to these battens either horizontally or vertically.

When applying horizontally start at the bottom and work up the wall overlapping where each layer meets. When installing vertically start at the high point and roll down the studs.

Apply tension to the SuperFOIL as you staple in place;  regular intervals of 50mm to 100mm spacing is recommended. Cut to length and fix the next layer.

Overlap all joints by a minimum of 50mm and staple onto the stud work where the joint crosses the stud. Seal all joints using SuperFOIL tape.

At the floor & ceiling trim SuperFOIL allowing a little overlap, seal the SuperFOIL as conditions dictate to create a continuous layer of insulation using SuperFOIL tape.

Apply tape to any tears, cuts or joints.

Then Install a counter batten to create an air space and onto the batten fix your internal finish such as plasterboard.

Note: SuperFOIL acts as a vapour control layer (Excluding our breathable products) when installed correctly as such an additional VCL is typically not required, if you are concerned that there may be a condensation risk in your particular circumstances please contact us and we can run a condensation risk analysis calculation.

Timber Frame External Insulation

Installing insulation externally is made easy with our Breathable range of insulation SF19BB and SF40BB. Which product you choose would depend on the performance you require.

By combining SFBB, our fully woven, high performance, reflective breather membrane, with the high thermal performance of SuperFOIL Insulation, you end up with a 2 in 1 product that reduces materials and install steps making our Breathable range a very cost effective solution!

Installation consists of fitting battens to the external wall, then stapling the SuperFOIL to the battens. You would then complete the install with counter battens and cladding or render board, brick skin etc.

How to Install

If an OSB board is required for racking: To achieve maximum performance a batten should be fixed to create an air gap on both sides of the SuperFOIL.

Install battens sized according to the product. Always apply battens around window reveals.

When installing horizontally start at the bottom of the wall and work up to the top, overlapping at each junction.

When installing vertically start at the high point and roll down to the floor.

Apply tension to the SuperFOIL as you staple in place;  regular intervals of 50mm to 100mm spacing is recommended. Cut to length and fix the next layer.

Overlap all joints by a minimum of 50mm and staple onto the batten/stud where the joint crosses the batten/stud.

At the floor & ceiling ensure extra length is allowed to ensure a good seal is created. Then fix with a batten.

Seal all joints, cuts & intrusions (such as pipes, ducting etc) using SuperFOIL tape before fixing your external surface to the battens.

It is best practice to use a breathable membrane layer such as SFBB, to act as a secondary rain barrier and reduce the risk of condensation.

If installing SF19BB, a separate breathable membrane is not required as SF19BB provides both insulation layer and breather membrane in one.

Solid Wall External Insulation

Installing SuperFOIL externally on a Solid Wall is very similar to a timber frame wall installation with SF19BB, SF40BB depending on your required performance.
