Choosing The Right Wall Insulation For Your Home

Wall schematics

Are your energy bills skyrocketing before your eyes? Are you spending more money heating your home than ever before? Effective insulation could be the straightforward solution you’re seeking. Ensuring that every corner of your home remains sealed, padded and protected from the elements could save you hundreds of pounds every year. It’s shocking to discover, but roughly 35% of all heat loss in your home occurs through the walls. High-quality and well-fitted wall insulation need to be a high priority.

If you’re unsure where to start choosing the proper wall insulation for your home; no need to worry! We’re here to help at SuperFOIL. Please read through our handy guide to wall insulation below.

Before we look at choosing the right multifoil wall insulation, we need to address two things; why you need wall insulation and why choose multifoil.

Why Is Wall Insulation Important?

First and foremost, insulation must target areas in your home where the heat tries to escape. There are three primary places where you should focus your efforts: the floors, the roof, and the walls. As we’ve mentioned in our introduction, roughly 35% of all heat loss from your home occurs through the walls. This is as much as your roof and floors combined, which account for around 25% and 10% respectively.

The best solution is to have high-quality insulation throughout your home. And it is important to choose the right insulation for each area of your home. (There are amazing multifoil insulation options designed specifically for various roof and floor applications too.) However, since over a third of heat loss comes from your walls, let’s start there.

Why Choose SuperFOIL multifoil Insulation?

There are a variety of materials available for insulating your home. So why choose SuperFOIL for your wall insulation?

Here are 10 reasons SuperFOIL is a fantastic choice for insulating your walls:

  • SuperFOIL insulation is more energy-efficient than many older insulation types.
  • Thin, streamlined design, making it suitable for applications with limited space.
  • Suitable solutions for both retrofit applications and new build installations
  • 50+ year lifespan
  • Can meet current building regulations without the need for additional insulation
  • Easy to install.
  • Wide range of products available
  • Can be used with other insulation types if wanted
  • 3 in 1 product combining insulation with either a breathable membrane or VCL with a radiant barrier
  • Made with up to 40% recycled materials

Choosing The Right Insulation

SuperFOIL insulation is undeniably great for retaining heat in your home. It has been carefully engineered to maximise effectiveness, and there is a selection of products, each tailored to specific uses. It is important that you use the correct insulation for the job. To ensure you choose the right wall insulation application, there are a few questions you’ll need answering.

What Type Of Insulation Do SuperFOIL Offer?

At SuperFOIL, we primarily cater for two types of walls, solid walls, and timber frames.  SuperFOIL offers unique insulation solutions for each application type and can cater for both internal and external installations.

The Best Insulation For Internal Walls:

We generally recommend using our multifoil range when insulating internally. They include a vapour control barrier, so fixing an additional VCL is unnecessary. Helping reduce common issues such as interstitial condensation and cold bridging.

We have a wide range of insulation options available depending on your insulation need, ranging from 30mm up to 100mm, you can be sure you will always get the right insulation when choosing SuperFOIL.

The Best Material To Insulate External Walls:

When insulating externally, we have breathable insulation designed especially for this purpose. A 3 in 1 product, with a built-in breathable membrane and radiant barrier, meaning less layers for you to install. By using the BB range, you are allowing for water vapour to escape the fabric of your build, reducing the risk of condensation and mould.

SuperFOIL offers breathable multifoil options at 1mm, 40mm, and 75mm, depending on your requirements. Our range has achieved a W1 waterproof rating so is suitable for use in walls as well as roofs.

Should I Choose External Or Internal Wall Insulation?

Whilst we would recommend insulating both internally and externally for the best energy efficiency, we understand that this isn’t always an option. Both insulation options have their pros and cons in terms of installation.

When looking at internal insulation, this can be installed on top of existing internal finishes such as plasterboard, however, this will eat into the space of the room.
External insulation however will require an external finish such as a render or cladding to be fitted, so is most commonly carried out by professional installers.

If trying to decide which application is best for you, why not give us a call to discuss the options, we can help by offering the best solution for your needs.

Insulation Is Part Of An Environmentally Friendly Home

Remember your insulation will always work most effectively alongside other energy-saving components, such as double or triple-glazed windows. Regardless of where your insulation is fitted, remaining mindful to shut windows and choosing suitable locations to install radiators is critical to a warm home. Whilst your walls do contribute to the most heat loss, you should insulate the whole of your home, including the roof and flooring, for optimal results. And with all insulation installations, you must choose the right product for the job.
