Does Multifoil Insulation Tear When Screwing it in Place?

You may have heard that the multiple layers and the fibrous cores of multifoil insulation tend to catch on screws, causing them to get tangled, rip and tear! But is that true?

NO!!!
Speaking from two decades’ worth of industry expertise and experience (helping thousands of people every year), we can assure you that multifoil is not only incredibly sturdy, but also one of the simplest to install insulation materials you could ever ask for.

Easy to carry, cut, install and even clean, multifoil makes the whole installation process twice as fast and half as complicated as traditional insulation types. Which means, when you follow our installation recommendations, multifoil gives you the most value for both time and money. That being said, if you do happen to install it incorrectly, you could end up delaying your project and possibly even limit the performance of the insulation, which is exactly why you want to make sure you’re using the right tools and techniques!

We’ve put together the following tips that you could incorporate into your standard install practice to properly secure multifoil without running into issues.

Compress and apply pressure: When screwing through the battens and into the SuperFOIL, it’s important to make sure you have the product compressed fully under the batten. Once the foil is properly compressed, applying pressure directly to the batten will prevent the screw from snagging the wadding material included within the layers of SuperFOIL. Plus, this pressure will help to compress the layers of foil as thinly as possible, enabling the screw to penetrate easily without snagging or ripping the product.

Use tested and certified screws: Care should be given to prevent foil insulation from binding around the screws, and some tools work better than others to avoid this issue. When fixing multifoil insulation to wooden battens, we’d recommend using a quality option like  Ulti-Mate® Wood Screw or  ForgeFast Screws.

Appropriate Screw Size: The weight and depth of your chosen insulation product will determine the type and size of the screws you should use to secure various layers of insulation with ease. This is why you should take some time to consider  both the thickness of the product and the size of the battens before beginning. That information will help you to choose the right screws for the job. Remember, multifoil products are not solid; they will compress. So you will need to know what the multifoil compresses to when fixed under the batten.  You will want to choose  screws that are slightly shorter than the combined thickness of the battens and the compressed thickness of the multifoil.

For example, the type of screw you may use for SuperFOIL SF19+ is not the one you want to use for installing SuperFOIL SF60, as the compressed thickness of layers for each product are different and requires you to use a different screw size. Again, using the right screws will avoid the chances of screws getting tangled up or tearing in the process and will provide good head strength to secure the foil in place.
