SuperFOIL SFBB Breather

TIMBER FRAME – EXTERNAL

A standard insulation material may insulate your external walls well. But SuperFOIL’s watertight and vapour-resistant multifoils will resist moisture penetration, improve thermal performance and offer better space optimisation and functionality.

Application

Insulating the exterior surface of a timber-framed wall is often the optimal choice, considering various factors such as hygrothermal performance, and building conservation. With a built-in vapor resistance of 1200MNs/g and a certified watertight and breathable membrane, you can choose from a range of external multifoil solutions that suit the best for your build-up without compromising performance.

SuperFOIL’s flexibility extends to its application; you can use it on its own, in single/duet configurations, or in combination with traditional insulation types like mineral wool or PIR boards.

All SuperFOIL products need to be stored indoors until used and should be covered within 48 hours after fitting.

Timber Frame Without OSB

When applying SuperFOIL, affix it directly to the studs horizontally with the built-in overlap facing the floor. Begin at the bottom of the wall and work upwards, maintaining tension during stapling at regular intervals of 50mm-100mm. We recommend installing the product horizontally for added protection from the elements, however, it can be installed vertically (with no adverse effects) if needed.

If vertical installation is necessary, start at the highest point, rolling the product down the wall. Ensure a sealed finish by cutting SuperFOIL to the required length and utilising the built-in overlap and tape for each layer.

To complete the installation, trim SuperFOIL at the floor and top, allowing for a slight overlap. Secure the product by fixing battens around the perimeter, creating an airtight finish. Ensure all tears or cuts are sealed fully using SuperFOIL Butyl tape or any other waterproof tape to achieve an airtight finish.

Install vertical counter battens on top of the SuperFOIL to create an air gap, and fix the external finish onto the battens following the manufacturer’s recommendations, ensuring no SuperFOIL is exposed to the elements.

Timber Frame With OSB

For maximum thermal performance, securely attach battens to the OSB, creating an air space on both sides of the SuperFOIL. Apply the SuperFOIL horizontally with the built-in overlap facing the floor, starting at the bottom and working upwards for each layer.

We recommend installing the product horizontally for added protection from the elements, however, it can be installed vertically (with no adverse effects) if needed. If applying the product vertically, start at the highest point and roll the product down the wall.

Staples should be spaced at 50mm-100mm intervals, ensuring the product is taut. Trim the SuperFOIL at the floor and top, allowing a small overlap, and secure it with battens around the perimeter for an airtight finish. Ensure all tears or cuts are sealed fully using SuperFOIL butyl tape or another suitable waterproof tape to achieve an airtight finish.

Alternatively, SuperFOIL can be directly attached to the OSB, though this method will decrease thermal performance. In either installation method, follow manufacturer recommendations for fixing external finishes to counter battens, ensuring no SuperFOIL is exposed to the elements.
