5 Things You Need to Know before Insulating Your House

Insulating your house is a great way of cutting down on costs and keeping the room temperature comfortable. However, there are several things you need to know before going to work. Otherwise, you won’t get the intended results.

Here are five crucial factors you have to think over:

1. INSULATING YOUR HOUSE ON YOUR OWN OR HIRING CONTRACTORS

Many people, especially self-builders, prefer to apply insulation on their own. Depending on the material you’re using and your knowledge, it can be quite easy. You just need a plan.

The advantage of making it a DIY project is that you save some money. You won’t have to pay contractors. The drawback is that it takes some time. Remember that construction work tends to leave a mess so cleaning up is an extra task.

It’s important that you decide right at the beginning who will be insulating your house. If you want to do it yourself, you have a smaller number of insulating options.

2. WHAT KIND OF INSULATION TO USE

Arguably, the biggest decision you’ll have to make is what material to use. That will influence how much money you save. After all, not all insulation is made equal.

Popular DIY kinds of insulators are batts of fibreglass and mineral wool, cellulose, and multi foils. Mainly used in attics as they are easy to install.

There is no perfect insulator. All insulation’s have advantages and disadvantages. Look for the one that fits your needs the best.

A relatively new kind of insulation is multifoil. Instead of absorbing heat like most others, it reflects it back to its source. This process makes sure your house stays warm during winter and cool during summer.

It’s also convenient for self-builders because it’s very light and thin. You can apply it yourself just about anywhere.

Consider your options carefully before making a decision. A mistake could cost you a hefty sum of money.

3. HOW TO INSTALL THE INSULATOR CORRECTLY

A large number of people decide to apply the insulation themselves but do it wrong. As a result, the house stays improperly insulated, and the difference is negligible. You need to make sure this doesn’t happen to you.

After choosing the insulation, learn about how it’s installed. Read up as much as you can. If, at any point, you’re unsure about something, ask the vendor or a contractor. It could save you a headache.

Make sure you respect every safety rule when insulating your house.

4. RECOGNISING FIRE HAZARDS

While insulating, you have to watch out for a few things. Otherwise, you can significantly increase the risk of a house fire.

Covering wires in insulation is dangerous. They can heat up or cause a spark and start a fire. Another risk is putting insulation above light fixtures for the same reason.

Additionally, if you chose spray foam, be extra careful. The material is flammable and would make an existing house fire even worse.

5. IF THE INSULATOR REQUIRES MAINTENANCE

Generally speaking, you shouldn’t have to worry about anything after insulating your home. It should last a lifetime. In practice, though, you may have to check on it from time to time.

Stepping on your attic insulation, for example, may lower its efficiency. There is a recommended thickness for every material. Check from time to time to make sure your insulation is up to snuff. If it isn’t, get another layer.

Moisture is another point of interest. It can slowly destroy your insulation and even your walls. Check for it and make sure you don’t get mould.

Lastly, wipe the dust off the insulation once in a while. It doesn’t make a big difference, but it does improve efficiency a bit.

If you think these five things through, you should be okay. It’s time to get to work insulating your house.
